Durham University Orchestral Society is now recruiting conductors of our Symphony and Chamber Orchestras for the 2017/18 academic year. DUOS has some of the most accomplished musicians within the university, allowing it to tackle challenging repertoire. Past notable performances include Shostakovich ‘Chamber Symphony’, Holst ‘The Planets’, Ravel ‘Daphnis and Chloé Suite No. 2’, Tchaikovsky ‘Symphony No. 5′, a new commission by John Casken for Sir Thomas Allen, and Respighi’s ‘Roman Trilogy’. It performs in some of Durham’s best venues, including Durham Cathedral, Durham Castle, and the Gala Theatre. DUOS also goes on tour each year to a European city and will be heading to Ljubljana this March. Conducting a DUOS orchestra is a fantastic experience and, for many, has been a launchpad into a professional conducting career. That said, applicants do not need to have a huge amount of orchestral conducting experience; we welcome applications from enthusiastic and personable individuals with a strong interest in music and some experience in musical directing.

To apply, you must be a student of Durham University, living in County Durham during term-time, throughout the 2017/18 academic year. Please send a Cover Letter and Repertoire Proposal to orchestral.society@durham.ac.uk no later than 23:59 on Thursday 2nd February 2017. The Cover Letter should outline your prior experience and motivation for applying, and be no more than one A4 page. The Repertoire Proposal should include programme suggestions for four DUOS concerts: Michaelmas Term Chamber Concert, Michaelmas Term Symphony Concert, Epiphany Term Joint Concert, and Easter Term Cathedral Concert. You should include reasoning in your Repertoire Proposal.

If successful, you will be invited to an audition on Thursday 9th February between 7.30 pm and 10.00 pm in Trevelyan College. The audition will consist of taking a 10-minute rehearsal with the Symphony Orchestra on an excerpt of orchestral music, followed by questions from the orchestra. You will also be invited to interview.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at orchestral.society@durham.ac.uk. I look forward to receiving your applications and wish you the best of luck.
