Saxophonist Sam Newbould (North Yorkshire, 1990) began playing the saxophone at the age of 13. After studying Geography at Durham University, he moved to Berlin to study at the Hochschule für Musik “Hanns Eisler”. In 2016, Newbould moved to the Netherlands to continue his saxophone studies at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, where he graduated in 2019.

The Sam Newbould Quintet, winner of the 2019 Keep an Eye Award and finalist of the 2020 Dutch Jazz Competition (announcement April 2021), brings together influences from Radiohead, Wayne Shorter, English folk music and 20th-century classical music into a blend of emotive melodies, lush harmony and progressive rock energy.

The band’s upcoming album (releasing 5th March 2021) has been described as: ‘a deep and dark rather profound reminiscent of some of Charles Mingus’ work. Rich, often discordant harmonies combine to make this compulsive listening’ (Bebop Spoken Here).
