Durham University Choral Society, affectionately known as DUCS, is one of Durham University’s largest and oldest musical societies, having performed continuously for nearly seventy years. We rehearse once a week and aim to provide all members with a friendly and inclusive environment to attain the highest standard of singing possible.
DUCS puts on a concert every term providing members with opportunities to perform in a wide variety of concert venues, including the iconic Durham Cathedral: an experience that few choir members forget. Experienced singers in the society receive many opportunities for solos and smaller ensemble singing. We also engage in a lot of outreach work, such as carolling at Durham Prison or singing at events run by local businesses.
The society is proud of its range of talent, composed of students from across a range of academic disciplines and backgrounds. Our regular socials encourage members to meet new people; the choir can often be found in the pub following most rehearsals!
DUCS specialises in large-scale repertoire often out of reach for other ensembles, offering a unique choral experience unmatched by any other choir at the university. The choir received the Experience Durham ‘Full Palatinate’ Award for Best Concert last year when we performed Mendelssohn’s much-loved oratorio Elijah. Past concerts have included works such as Parry’s Songs of Farewell, Duruflé’s Requiem & Messe ‘cum Jubilo’, Britten’s Saint Nicholas and Handel’s Dixit Dominus.
We welcome singers from across the university, whether undergraduate, postgraduate, student or staff, to audition. For more information, please contact our President, Tom Cameron, at [email protected].
