Durham University Classical Ensemble (DUCE) is the University’s newest orchestra, having been founded in 2015. DUCE concentrates exclusively on performing Baroque, Classical and early Romantic repertoires, with an emphasis on historically informed performance. Being one of the smallest ensembles, we pride ourselves on our friendly and welcoming atmosphere.
Despite coming from a shorter time period than that of Durham’s other orchestras, DUCE’s repertoire is exciting, ambitious and varied. Our concerts explore pieces from the Baroque, Classical, and early Romantic periods, such as Rebel’s Les caractères de la danse, Mozart’s Magic Flute Overture, Beethoven’s 7th and 9th Symphonies, and Schubert’s 9th Symphony, just to name a few. The ensemble also features regular soloists through concerto auditions which are held annually in December.
As well as concerts in Durham, DUCE has toured to Barcelona, Leipzig and Vienna in recent years at the start of the summer holidays.
DUCE rehearses on Friday evenings in the Music Department Concert Room, from 6:30 – 9pm.
