Durham University Classical Ensemble (DUCE) is the University’s newest orchestra, having been founded in 2015.  DUCE concentrates on pre-1832 music, covering Baroque, Classical and early Romantic repertoires, with an emphasis on historically informed performance.  Being one of the smaller ensembles, we pride ourselves on our friendly and welcoming atmosphere, and creating a community feel throughout the orchestra.

Despite covering a shorter time period than that of Durham’s other orchestras, DUCE’s repertoire is exciting, ambitious and varied.  Our concerts explore pieces such as Rebel’s Les Caractères de la Danse, Mozart’s Magic Flute Overture, Beethoven’s 7th and 9th Symphonies, Schubert’s 9th Symphony, and Fanny Mendelssohn’s Overture in C, to name just a few.

As well as concerts in Durham, DUCE has toured to Barcelona, Leipzig and Vienna in recent years at the start of the summer holidays.

DUCE rehearses on Friday evenings in the Music Department Concert Room, from 6:30 – 9pm.

The whole orchestra is auditioned in Freshers’ Week. The audition consists of a solo piece (approximately 5 minutes, or an extract of a piece lasting 5 minutes) performed unaccompanied; performance of an orchestral excerpt provided around 10 minutes before the audition; and a chat about your previous musical experience (percussion auditions differ slightly). Feel free to get in touch if you have any questions!
