An die Freude (DUCE)
15 June 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm
This concert is a celebration of joy, hope and unity. These might seem unusual themes given the current political climate, so perhaps it is best to say it is an appeal to awaken those virtues. and awake they shall be.
Haydn’s Creation Overture takes us from the depths of chaos through to the implication of developing clarity. Then the Weber Clarinet Concerto gives us a practical narrative of the individual and society as cohesive, competitive units who can achieve their most profound expression with cooperation. Finally, the light is shed, and Beethoven’s earth shattering 9th Symphony finishes off the evening. This is a personal as well as a general tale of struggle, peace in death, and ascent to Elysium and universal brotherhood; all played with DUCE’s consummate grace and learned stylistic practice.
