Children of Light: Rubbra’s ‘Nine Tenebrae Motets’ and Lang’s ‘The Little Match Girl Passion’

March 3 @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm

Following a sell-out concert in Durham Castle in December 2022, Durham University Chamber Choir presents a concert of music for passiontide, thematically bound by the idea of the flame. The concert centres on two major works: Edmund Rubbra’s Nine Tenebrae Motets and David Lang’s Pulitzer Prize-winning The Little Match Girl Passion. Rubbra’s tryptich sets the Tenebrae texts from Matins on Maundy Thursday, whilst Lang’s non-Christocentric Passion, set for chorus, soloists and percussion, creates an allegory for the crucifixion of Christ, using Hans Christian Anderson’s tale of ‘The Little Match Girl’. These two works mirror each other through the literal fading of the flame, but also converge in the nexus of enduring love, represented in the concert’s bookends through music by William Drakett and Jake Runestad.
