DUPO Symphony Concert
01/12/2018 @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pmFree – £10
For our first concert of this year, DUPO Symphony are pleased to present Brahms’ incredible second symphony, as well as Brahms’ Academic Festival Overture and Dvořák’s Slavonic Dance No. 8.
After wrestling for a long time with the symphony genre, Brahms finally finished his first symphony in spring 1877. Shortly after, in the summer of 1877, he went to the Austrian town of Pörtschach am Wörthersee and started to compose his second symphony, which was premiered on the 30th December 1877. Whereas Brahms needed several years to compose his first symphony, he was relatively quick with the second, which is often considered to be his most popular symphony. It’s a great piece of music and we are very excited to be performing it in our first concert of the year, 140 years and 336 days after the first performance by the Viennese Philharmonic, in Elvet Methodist Church.
The four movements are:
– 1. Allegro non troppo
– 2. Adagio non troppo
– 3. Allegretto grazioso quasi Andantino – Presto ma non assai – Tempo primo – Presto ma non assai – Tempo primo
– 4. Allegro con spirito
The concert will be conducted by Matthias Lichtenfeld and the leader will be Chris Savage.
We hope to see you there!
