Durham Singers Ensemble on period instruments
(leader: Caroline Balding)
Haydn’s great oratorio The Creation is a wondrous journey from primordial chaos to the ordered beauty of the Garden of Eden. Along the way, we encounter Haydn’s extraordinarily vivid musical descriptions of the first explosion of light, the first sunrise, and all the natural glories that fill the beautiful planet that we call home, from the creeping worms and the great whales to the soaring eagles. Haydn’s orchestration is both imaginative and fun, and, in what we believe will be the first period instrument performance of The Creation in the region, the members of the Durham Singers Ensemble will bring out all these colourful details as Haydn originally envisaged them.
We will also be returning to Haydn’s original intentions in our choice of words, as we use an edition based on the original English libretto that Haydn studied in London and that he used for his own English performances.
The trio of angels who guide us through Haydn’s universe is led by Samling Artist Bradley Travis in the role of Raphael, whilst the other angels and the parts of Adam and Eve will be sung by four young singers from the Samling Academy, a programme that nurtures and develops young singers who live or study in the North East.
Dr Giles Gaspar will be give a pre-concert talk “Creation Song” in the cathedral at 7pm – free to ticket holders
