Kim Dongeon (voice) | Freeing the Spirit | Shaman Ritual Music from South Korea
3 December 7:30 pm
In South Korea’s East Coast region, there are still some communities that hire hereditary shamans to perform lengthy health-restoring rituals. These events are remarkable for their Buddhist-infused polytheistic folk belief, colourful paper flowers, lengthy mythic songs, elegant dance, and exuberant percussion-based music played on janggo drum, gongs and cymbals. When in full flow, the ritualists’ music is perhaps the most rhythmically complex, improvisatory and virtuosic music in the whole of East Asia. This concert features the three most celebrated hereditary shaman ritualists from Busan: Kim Dongeon, Kim Dongyeol, and their son Kim Jinhwan. They are joined by the tradition’s preeminent drummer Kim Junghee and his son Jo Jonghun, who have both performed in MUSICON before, exactly 10 years ago. All tonight’s performers have been officially recognised as the main keepers of nationally-important ‘Intangible Cultural Heritage’ and their skills are sure to amaze and invigorate you.
