Music Durham Lunchtime Concert
- This event has passed.
March 4 @ 1:15 pm - 1:45 pm
Music Durham and the Music Department are organising a concert of works by female composers, the aim of which is to discover composers whose achievements have been overlooked on account of their gender (whether dead or alive), and to increase the awareness of their works. We would particularly welcome contributions that bring to light women composers of colour and non-Western traditions.
We are keen for as many performers (of whatever gender identity) as possible to get involved; and to include a wide range of repertoire, genre and idiom: from choral contributions to chamber music to solo performance; from European baroque to jazz to Khyal – anything goes! Please get in touch if you’d like to contribute something; or if you’d like to perform, but need some advice on repertoire: [email protected]
We are keen to rediscover women who have not yet received lots of performances. You may find these web resources useful for finding composers and repertoire (whether for this concert, or your own):
https://www.composerdiversity.com/composer-diversity-database (this one allows you to search by ensemble, time period, part of the world, ethnicity!)
https://www.archiv-frau-musik.de/en/online-quellen-links (this is a page of different resources)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_female_composers_by_birth_date (good old wiki!)
Should you like to contribute, please write to Amanda at [email protected] with the name, composer and length of the piece by the 5th February at the latest. If you have trouble finding sheet music for a particular composer, please get in touch to see if we can persuade the library to buy it. We look forward to hearing from you!
