MUSICON 6 – 20th Century Music 2: The 1970s
- This event has passed.
10 February 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm
Lore Lixenberg (mezzo-soprano), Trevor Wishart (sound diffusion) and the Ives Ensemble.
Kazimierz Serocki – Swinging Music
Luigi Nono – …sofferte onde serene…
Morton Feldman – Voice, violin and piano
Richard Rijnvos – Riflesso sull’arco
Trevor Wishart – Red Bird
The second concert in “20th Century Music” opens a door to the 1970s and the fun and resilient, as well as the more sombre and esoteric music of this decade. From Nono’s staggeringly beautiful depiction of Venetian church bells, to Serocki’s poignantly humorous jazz riffs, and Feldman’s pure abstract elegance. Rijnvos’ recent quartet is a so-called ‘companion piece’ to Swinging Music, appropriating this piece’s instrumental combination of clarinet, trombone, cello and piano, to create a haunting overtone study on the letters B A C H.
The second hald of the concert will feature one of the greatest electroacoustic masterpieces of the 20th century: Trevor Wishart’s Red Bird, subtitled A Political Prisoner’s Dream. The textural palette of this work is an absolute marvel, particularly given the technology with which it was created. Using the studios at York University, Wishart painstakingly constructed a soundworld that is a true testament to its time; a musical tour-de-force that is as relevant both musically and conceptually today and for the future as it was when it was written. The composer himself will be present at the mixing-desk, allowing us the rare opportunity to be guided through the piece by his own hand.
