MUSICON Focus Weekend: 20th Century Music

10/02/2018 @ 8:00 am - 11/02/2018 @ 5:00 pm

£10 – £25

The world has changed far more in the past 100 years than in any other century in history. Stephen W. Hawking

The last four decades of the 20th century mark perhaps the greatest period of development, innovation, and fragmentation in the history of Western art music. After the history of systematised chromatic music saw its natural culmination in the total serialism of the 1950s, the world of contemporary art music was in many ways an empty canvas. As a result, composers began taking much more individualistic approaches to style and aesthetic than ever before. The proliferation of experimentalism and a range of other theories and methods meant that by the end of the century there was as many styles as there were composers in the world.

The four concerts in this festival offer us a chance to dip our toes into the musical currents of each of these four decades, from where the wave form to where it crested, taking us to the very eve of the new millennium, with the aptly named 2oth Century Music, written by Laurence Crane on the 31st December 1999. The festival will also include two premieres: pieces written especially for MUSICON by up-and-coming composers Mark Carroll and Oliver Leith.
