MUSICON: Festival of East Asian Music | Concert 2 | Kyoku: Sound Colours from Japan
10/03/2019 @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm£1 – £10
This year, Musicon presents its 7th Festival of East Asian Music – three concerts showcasing wonderfully virtuosic musical artistry while opening windows onto the rich musical heritages of China, Japan and Korea.
A pre-festival talk with Dr. Simon Mills about the instruments and repertoires featured in the three concerts will take place in the Music Department Lecture Room at 17.00 on Saturday 9th March.
The multi-instrumentalist composer Mieko Miyazaki returns to Durham – this time joined by Suizen Lagrost, a phenomenal player of the shakuhachi bamboo flute. The bright sonorities of Miyazaki’s koto zither, shamisen lute and voice blend perfectly with the haunting sounds of Lagrost’s flute, creating a wonderfully varied and evocative palette of sound colours. In this concert, the duet performs a selection of traditional kyoku chamber pieces, celebrated works from the early 20th century, and newer pieces that playfully fuse styles from contrasting places and times – taking you on a journey which is sure to be poetic, intense and surprising.
