MUSICON: Festival of East Asian Music | Concert 3 | A Journey through the Korean Musical Imagination
11/03/2019 @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm
£1.00 – £10.00This year, Musicon presents its 7th Festival of East Asian Music – three concerts showcasing wonderfully virtuosic musical artistry while opening windows onto the rich musical heritages of China, Japan and Korea.
A pre-festival talk with Dr. Simon Mills about the instruments and repertoires featured in the three concerts will take place in the Music Department Lecture Room at 17.00 on Saturday 9th March.
Tonight’s concert is performed by Project Haal, a small musical collective that unites top talents from the world of traditional Korean music with the leading Korean composer Yoon Hyejin. Exploring the natural-sounding timbres of Korean percussion, daegeum flute and gayageum zither, they present traditional Korean pieces alongside exciting new compositions that imaginatively rework ancient ideas and sounds, showing how Korean music continues to reflect past, present and future. “Haal” is an exclamation made by Buddhist monks at the moment of realisation and, in this concert, the group seeks to provoke some “haal” moments.
