MUSICON: Festival of East Asian Music | Concert 1 | Flowers of Jiangnan
9 March 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm
This year, Musicon presents its 7th Festival of East Asian Music – three concerts showcasing wonderfully virtuosic musical artistry while opening windows onto the rich musical heritages of China, Japan and Korea.
A pre-festival talk with Dr. Simon Mills about the instruments and repertoires featured in the three concerts will take place in the Music Department Lecture Room at 17.00 on Saturday 9th March.
In their home region of Jiangnan in China, located to the South of the lower Yangtze River, Qian Zhan and Xianya Zhang are renowned teachers and performers on the guzheng zither and erhu fiddle. They are well-recognised for their virtuosity and their deep roots in the old tradition but, at the same time, are right at the forefront of developing fresh new repertoire for their instruments. Visiting the UK specially to perform for you, tonight they perform classics from the Jiangnan area as well as some of their most recent creations.
