MUSICON: A Woman’s Voice | Suffrage at 100
11/12/2018 @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm£1 – £10
with guest performers
The programme includes:
Works by Dame Ethel Smyth, Clara Wieck-Schumann, Fanny Hensel Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, Ruth Crawford-Seeger, and Lily Boulanger.
This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Representation of the People Act, which allowed certain women over the age of 30 the chance to vote; in December 1918 women were also able to stand for election. To celebrate this monumental victory, Musicon presents a programme of some of the greatest piano works by women composers from the 19th and 20th centuries, including a series of works by Dame Ethel Smyth, member of the women’s suffrage movement, and recipient of an honorary doctorate from Durham University.
While the Western world is moving slowly towards gender equality, women composers are still greatly underrepresented in our concert halls. Musicon is committed to redressing this issue.
A pre-concert talk with Dr. Katherine Hambridge and Dr. Erin Johnson-Williams will take place in the Music Department Lecture Room at 18.00.
