MUSICON: NEW MUSIC Focus | Concert 3
24 February 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm
This year’s Musicon focus event offers three opportunities for you to hear the Ives Ensemble play some hidden gems from the repertoire of the last 50 years or so. The concerts will focus on pieces by Alvin Lucier and Aldo Clementi – two composers whose works are as enigmatic as they are considered. Both stand out as towering enigmas of invention with a near-stubborn insistence on a purity of artistic vision that is as rare as it is captivating.
A pre-festival talk with Ives Ensemble director and pianist John Snijders will take place in the Music Department Lecture Room at 18.00 on Saturday 23rd February.
Rik Andriessen – flute
Hans Petra – clarinet
John Snijders – piano
Josje ter Haar – violin
Job ter Haar – cello
Alvin Lucier – December 12th
Aldo Clementi – Lamento
Carola Bauckholt – Oh I See
Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen – Moments Musicaux
Franco Donatoni – Etwas ruhiger im Ausdruck
To conclude this year’s Musicon Focus, we are treated to a rare performance of Lucier’s December 12th, which rather spectacularly makes our ears hear things that are not there by combining recorded sine waves with live instruments. To complement this, Clementi’s Lamento presents the exact same canonic landscape three times in in increasingly slower tempi, each sounding different to the next, and gradually revealing the breathtakingly beautiful hidden world within. To contrast this, Bauckholt shows us that sounds really can come from any source, and that music and humour can go hand in hand, while Gudmundsen-Holmgreen and Donatoni borrow other people’s music (Schubert and Schoenberg) to make their own distinctly personal and exquisite worlds of sound.
