Ives Ensemble – New Music Focus 1 | Lines and Shadows
- This event has passed.
26 October 4:00 pm - 5:30 pm
The Ives Ensemble will be celebrating MUSICON’s fiftieth anniversary with a series of concerts that express their affinity with and deep commitment to music in and from Durham. As many know, our city has a strong and rich musical history, spanning throughout the ages. In the recent past, Durham has also become a centre for contemporary music – more composers in this versatile and pioneering field are based here than anywhere else in the North-East. Over three concerts this internationally renowned and distinguished group will perform works by no less than six composers who form part of the recent musical fabric of Durham.
The first concert of the festival includes works by Durham-based composers Ian Dickson and Eric Skytterholm Egan, alongside two stoically beautiful pieces based on the idea of lines. Egan’s work choreographs the outlines of bomb craters in North Korea, while Lamb’s piece consists entirely of short lines drawn on three short pages. Each of these pieces show how even simple shapes can express far more in music than they might appear to express on the page.
