Music Durham is excited to welcome Nicholas McCarthy, the world’s only one-handed concert pianist, to perform in Durham city during the Festival of the Arts. Nicholas specialises in the Left Hand Alone repertoire which began in the 19th century and developed as a result of the First World War. Liszt, Bach, Chopin and even Gershwin are featured in this repertoire along with so many striking concertos including Ravel Piano Concerto for Left hand. Nicholas’s recitals are always very engaging with the items of repertoire being introduced giving the very interesting stories behind them.
Nicholas McCarthy was born in 1989 without his right hand and found the piano at age 14. Following his fair share of challenges and attempts at discouragement, Nicholas went on to gain a place at the Royal College of Music where his historic graduation in 2012 made press around the world. Shortly followed by playing at the Paralympic closing ceremony and sharing a stage with Coldplay.
Nicholas’ international concert career began in 2010 and has seen him tour Malta, South Africa, make his US debut at the Kennedy Centre in Washington D.C and address the entire Royal Albert Hall, in a TED Talk as part of their Albertopolis celebration.
Nicholas has played all over the U.K and toured internationally including South Korea, South Africa and Malta. With Japan, China and Istanbul for 2016.
“His amazing display of prowess, stamina and determined energy was nothing but dazzling.”
