Save the date for a concert performance by Durham Castle Chapel Choir of Ben Rowarth’s sung Compline Service.
‘Night Prayer’ is a new and exciting musical sequence for voices, composed by renowned and up-and-coming composer, Durham Graduate, Ben Rowarth. The work was commissioned by the London Festival of Contemporary Church Music to receive two world premieres as part of the week long festival: one in St Pancras Parish Church, London, and one in Durham Cathedral, sung by University College Chapel Choir under the direction of Jeremy Cowen.
Rowarth’s ‘Night Prayer’ is a through-composed setting of the various fascinating elements of the Compline service. While delving into themes of intimacy, fear, life, and death, this piece particularly looks to explore new ways that sound can be manipulated and experiences in different parts of large spaces. Ben’s work has recently been receiving five star reviews from BBC Music Magazine, Classical Source, and Choir and Organ where he has been described as “daring, expressive and intelligent…A truly twenty-first century aesthetic”.
