Orchestral Society Cathedral Concert

17 June 2017 7:30 pm - 10:00 pm
The Orchestral Society’s annual Cathedral Concert featuring the Symphony Orchestra conducted by Alex Mackinder and the Chamber Orchestra conducted by John Reddel.
Join the Orchestral Society as they take over the majestic Durham Cathedral as part of the Durham Festival of the Arts with a diverse and thrilling programme, including Finzi’s gorgeous Romance for String Orchestra and Mahler’s towering Symphony No. 1.
John Reddel and the Chamber Orchestra’s string section begin the concert with the Finzi, allowing them to show off their warmth and sonority through the light-hearted yet nostalgic Romance. Following this, they are joined by the rest of the Chamber Orchestra for Schoenberg’s Chamber Symphony No. 2. The intricate texture allows great clarity which brings the individuality of the performers to the fore as they weave this unusual tapestry.
Finally, the full Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Alex Mackinder presents Mahler’s Symphony No. 1. The beginning of the work evokes nature and progresses through a number of folk tunes, before the final movement’s opening lets loose a colossal outburst of despair that is one of classical music’s most emotionally-charged moments. The ending of the work, galvanised by an eight-strong horn section and two sets of timpani, transforms the mood into a glorious expression of triumph – as these will be the final notes that graduating members play as part of the Orchestral Society, expect an extraordinary atmosphere as the last chords reverberate around the Cathedral.
