Workshop: Reviewing and Broadcasting Classical Music, with Dr Flora Willson
28/10/2019 @ 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm
This discussion will be of interest to all who want to know more about/get into writing and talking about the arts for a broad public. Flora writes about music for The Guardian and Opera magazine and appears regularly on BBC Radio 3, both as an invited guest and as a presenter. She contributes programme notes, gives pre-performance talks and presents discussions and events for companies including English National Opera, Glyndebourne Festival Opera, the Royal Opera House and the Southbank Centre. She has acted as a consultant to opera companies, the V&A and film production companies and has recently collaborated with Royal Opera House, the V&A and FutureLearn to create the world’s first introductory MOOC (massive open online course) about opera.
The session will run as a Q and A, chaired by Dr Katherine Hambridge, and will include some practical discussion of review-writing, getting started in arts media, networking and self-promotion, the demands of different types of writing, as well as topics such as opera’s relevance/elitism and the challenge of attracting new audiences. There will be the opportunity to ask questions!
