Workshop: Shape note singing
29/11/2018 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm
Shape-Note Singing Workshop: All Welcome!
‘Shape-note’ notation developed in nineteenth-century America as a sight-singing tool. Used for nondenominational hymn singing, it continued as a solfege practice from the mid-1800s in parts of the American South. Now shape-note notation, most commonly published in the Sacred Harp hymnal, is sung throughout the world. The raw sound of shape note harmonies, popularised by the 2003 film Cold Mountain, is warm and powerful. This interactive masterclass welcomes any interested musicians; singing experience is not a prerequisite.
