Following our very successful and enjoyable masterclass last term with Jason Huxtable, we are delighted to be hosting the prominent jazz guitarist Ant Law, from 2-4pm on Wednesday 3rd March. Tom Ollendorff Gig
Jazz Society are delighted to welcome guitarist Tom Ollendorff , who has been fast building a reputation as an outstanding improviser and imaginative composer. His album A Song For You is an elegantly accomplished mix of gracefully grooving songlike themes, warmly conversational improvising, baroque-like unaccompanied etudes, and headlong fast-bop swing. JazzSoc’s second After Hours of the term is an exciting recital of music from the fantastic Brazilian genre of Bossa Nova. An outstanding genre within Jazz, Bossa Nova is a Latin American samba tradition that has also been a spark of inspiration for jazz musicians like Dexter Gordon and Cannonball Adderley. Featuring compositions and arrangements by Antônio Carlos Jobim, João Gilberto, Dizzy Gillespie, and many more, highlighting the authentic Bossa Nova sound as well as its collaboration with American Jazz. Come to Cafédral to see some of JazzSoc’s great musicians perform a showcase of these fantastic Brazilian tunes!

Gareth Lockrane Big Band Masterclass
Come and join Durham University Jazz Orchestra and Durham University Big Band in a masterclass with the incredible Gareth Lockrane! An award-winning jazz flautist, big band leader, and educator, Gareth Lockrane is one of the biggest names in jazz in the UK and we are delighted to welcome him to Durham. You don’t have to be part of the big bands to attend, this event is open to anyone for viewing!

It’s the moment you’ve all been waiting for – JazzSoc: Live at the Ballroom! This year our charity ball will be raising money for the eating disorder charity BEAT. With music from Cuths Big Band, Durham University Jazz Orchestra, and Durham University Big Band. We also have the wonderful Swing Dance Society who will be performing and teaching you some of their stellar moves! Durham Poker Society will also be in attendance with tables and teachers for you to try your hand and improve your poker skills. It’s not one to be missed!
