The New Art Music Ensemble explore simple resonances in the beautiful Norman Chapel, through the sparse pieces of the Wandelweiser Collective. NAME Collective is a non-auditioned ensemble, open to all instrumentalists and singers. It performs a variety of text pieces and graphic scores, in the past performing works by composers such as Cornelius Cardew, Karlheinz Stockhausen, and Will Redman, as well as members of the Collective. Ben Smith (piano) presents works which explore the metaphysics of ‘notes’. The programme includes Vinko Globokar’s rarely performed work ‘notes’, which turns the piano and pianist into objects to be deconstructed, as well as landmark works from recent decades, which — from radically different aesthetic positions — ask ‘what are notes?’ Free entry.

Musicon Concert Series 2020/2021: Small is Beautiful

For Musicon's first event of the term our Head of Performance John Snijders will be presenting a diverse mix of short piano pieces from the early 20th century, showcasing the many ways in which composers hone their craft in constructing perfectly formed musical jewels in a variety of styles, ranging from post-Wagner Romanticism through French clarity and Young Classicism to North and South American folk music. Book of Flames and Shadows – a Musicon concert
