Hong Yoo and Jieun Kang perform Korean court music, folk art repertoire, and modern compositions on two of Korea’s most distinctive instruments, the daegeum bamboo flute and haegeum fiddle. Yoo and Kang are prominent figures in the world of Korean traditional music and, in this concert, they present us with an astonishing range of sound colours, captivating our senses in the present moment.

One of the leading shakuhachi players in Europe, Horacio Curti’s creativity extends out from the ancient Japanese Zen Buddhist repertoire into more experimental contemporary composition. In this concert, he performs a wide selection of works from Japan and beyond to showcase this enchanting instrument’s full palette of sonorities. He also treats us to an improvisation, specially tailored for the occasion.

In Chinese culture, it has long been recognised that the silk-stringed lute and bamboo flute form a perfect pair. In this concert, celebrated pipa master Lingling Yu and up-and-coming flautist Hongze An celebrate this close relationship, playing well-known classics from the heart of the tradition as well as more recent compositions.

You don’t have to be part of the big bands to attend, this event is open to anyone for viewing!

Join Durham University Orchestral Society Symphony Orchestra for an evening celebrating the hidden gems of English symphonic music in Durham Cathedral. The evening begins with Ethel Smyth's scintillating Overture to The Wreckers followed by the virtuosic Cello Concerto in D minor by C.V Stanford performed by soloist Richard Jenkinson. The symphony orchestra are also delighted to be able to perform C.V. Stanford's Incidental Music written to Lord Tennyson's play Becket, a piece not heard for over 100 years, thanks to the research of Professor Jeremy Dibble. The concert concludes with Samuel-Coleridge Taylor's sublime Variations on an African Air.
