Founded in 2017, we are one of Music Durham’s newest ensembles, specialising in the field of close harmony Barbershop singing. Dsepite being such a young society, we have achieved a huge amount. In our debut year we were delighted to be announced as the winners of the ‘Best Music Society’ category in the Palatinate Music and Theatre Awards. We are an auditioned SATB barbershop choir of around 24 members, who rehearse once a week on a Tuesday evening. We aim to put on at least one solo concert per term, providing a range of performance opportunities for members. Alongside solo concerts, in the past years we have been involved in collaborative performances and various gigs and charity events throughout the year.
One of the most important things for us has always been that we are a group of warm and welcoming members, a quality which we pride ourselves on. The social element is very important to us, ensuring we have various types of socials planned throughout the academic year. Primarily we seek to become not only a choir of high-level singers and performers but a group of friends. Additionally, we are far more than just a university society, and we pride ourselves on contributing to our local community. We work alongside the charity DASH, which provides supported and unsupported housing to single people who are homeless or about to become homeless, and have raised money for this amazing cause.
Last year we performed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, selling out all six of our shows! During our time at the Fringe we were also awarded the Derek award, naming Full Score as the best A Cappella group at the Fringe in 2019. We had so much fun performing at the Fringe and hope to do it again this year! There are so many more amazing and exciting things planned for the year, so from busking to charity concerts to going on tour, there’s plenty for all members to get involved with.
For auditions, we would like to hear a solo piece of your choice (2 – 3 minutes). This MUST be performed without backing or accompaniment. We recommend a jazz standard or a piece of Musical Theatre. There will also be a range test and a couple of short aural exercises. For our top tips and ideas of what we are looking for, check out the Full Score Auditions event on Facebook or drop us a message!
