Open Mic Society is a newly formed society, running an event every fortnight that invites all musicians to perform. It is the first university-based Open Mic society in Durham.
At events, anyone can perform; from bands to solo artists. The society works towards establishing a network of musicians through a supportive environment for performing and creates a place where members can meet other musicians alike. Open Mic also collaborates with other societies in the university, giving them as many opportunities to perform as they can.
We invite all musicians of Durham University; we are non-selective and are open to a full diversity of genres and instruments. No auditions are required, and you don’t need to be an experienced musician or performer.
Open Mic Nights are usually run in the Food Pit, although some events have been held in Fabio’s bar, and we aim to expand our locations to colleges and other bars in Durham. Our locations are chosen such that they create a friendly environment, without the pressures of a typical stage performance.
If you are a musician, you can join our community as a performer. Open Mic Society does not expect any commitments for performing. You can also message the Facebook page to book a slot for a particular Open Mic Night.
If you are not a musician but want to be part of the community, there are executive opportunities, such as tech and media. These are a great chance to hone your sound-tech skills. It is also a great head-start for students keen to work in the music industry in the future.
Open Mic Society is perfect for you if you want (more) experience performing, if you want to meet other musicians, plan music events, and/ or are thinking of a job in the music industry.
