Durham University Palatinate Orchestra is now recruiting conductors for our Symphony and Chamber Orchestras for 2016/17. DUPO is one of the leading university orchestras which performs a range of exciting and challenging repertoire. In previous years the orchestra has performed pieces ranging from Rimsky Korsakov’s Scheherazade, Sibelius 2nd Symphony and Brahms 1st Symphony. Last year the orchestra was also privileged to perform a world premiere of Richard Rijnvos’ Chants de Espagne. DUPO have had the opportunity to play in an array of exciting venues this year ranging from Castle Great Hall to the Gala Theatre where the orchestra held an outreach project for school children in the local area.
DUPO go on an annual tour at the end of the exam period and this year we are off to Paris and Lille and are performing in Lille Cathedral. Conducting either of the DUPO orchestras is a fantastic opportunity for aspiring conductors where they can build on their skills in a friendly hard working society. Applicants do not need to have a huge amount of orchestral conducting experience; we welcome applications from enthusiastic and friendly individuals who have passion about making music and directing.
To apply, you must be a student at Durham University and living in County Durham during the university term dates throughout the academic year in 2016/17. The audition will take place on Sunday 8th May between 7:30 and 10pm in Trevelyan College in the James Knott Hall. The audition will consist of taking a 10 minute rehearsal with the Symphony Orchestra on an excerpt of orchestral music which will be followed by questions from the orchestra. You will then be invited to an interview on Monday 9th May. For the interview you will be asked to provide a list of possible orchestral repertoire you would like to conduct with DUPO.
