Concert Band are back and bigger than ever! On the 29th November, they will leave behind the chilly lands of Durham for the razzle dazzle of Manhattan, with an evening of heart-warming show tunes in a Broadway specacular.
I was luck enough to attend their most recent rehearsal, where I chatted with co-conductor, Chloe Langham:
“Concert Band are heading to Broadway for what promises to be an evening full of fun, quirky and familiar show tunes! From ‘The Sound of Music’ to Gershwin’s ‘Porgy and Bess’, to concert band classic ‘New York’ by Michael Hess, there is something for everyone!”
Concert Band’s 65-strong ensemble perfectly befits and embodies this Broadway theme. Their programme perfectly encapsulated the glamour and bright lights of Broadway, combining the sophistication of old Hollywood with the downtown jazz of New York. Whilst their enormous woodwind section and flashy upper brass provides the Broadway razzmatazz, the ensemble is underpinned by a sumptuous heavy brass section, including two tubas!
Concert Band will also perform the infamous ‘Mambo’, the Cuban-inspired, rhythmically vibrant dance from West Side Story. From what I heard in rehearsal this is sure to be a highlight. Their glamorous programme has also fostered new talent. Co-conductor Hugo Jennings has written a fabulous new arrangement of ‘Hello Dolly’. ‘Guys and Dolls’ and ‘There is Nothing Like a Dame’, all of which are full of Broadway soul.
So come along and listen to the lullabies of Broadway by Concert Band, 29th November in Durham Castle Great Hall. Tickets available NOW here. But act fast – there are less than 20 tickets left!
