St Cuthbert’s Society Chapel Choir comprises around 20 singers, most of whom audition at the beginning of the academic year. We are very proud to have a close link with St Margaret’s Church on Crossgate, where we rehearse and where we regularly sing services to a large and appreciative congregation. Our repertoire is broad and encompasses music for Eucharist, Evensong, and Compline, with pieces drawn from the best of choral repertoire. Beyond the sacred and liturgical music we sing in services, we are regularly invited to sing at Cuths formals and at other college events.
Recently we have organised joint evensongs with other chapel choirs in Durham, and as well as singing services in Durham Cathedral have ventured away from Durham to sing services in other great cathedrals of the North; most recently in St Mary’s Cathedral Edinburgh. There is an annual tour every summer, usually to a European capital, where we sing services and often a concert; in recent years destinations have included Paris and Dublin.
Although most places are filled at the beginning of the academic year, there are occasionally vacancies for singers arising throughout the year. If you are interested, or to find out more, please contact the Music Director, James Whitehead.
