Hild Bede Chapel Choir is one of the many college chapel choirs here at Durham University. This student-run choir comprises of approximately 24 auditioned singers committing to 2 services a week: Wednesday Evensong and Sunday morning Eucharist, each usually preceded by an hour and a half rehearsal. We also sing Compline and Taize every other week and often get the chance throughout the year to perform at other venues outside Durham, which last year included a tour to Florence and evensong in St Paul’s, London. As we have limited rehearsal time, we are looking for good sight readers who will practice their part in their own time.
Regarding choral scholarships, Hild Bede Chapel Choir currently offers 2 per voice part to members of Hild Bede College. This should however not deter any application from members of other colleges as the choir also offers many other opportunities, from masterclasses to two free college meals a week, very popular amongst livers-out. Auditions for these scholarships are different to most of the other college chapel choirs as we hold separate auditions after Christmas, where we can not only assess skill but also commitment during the previous term. Financially, the choral scholarships are each worth £125 per annum, but we are currently waiting for more detail from the college finance department.
We will be at the Experience Durham Freshers’ Fair, where you can sign up for choir auditions, which will take place towards the end of Freshers’ Week. In the auditions you will be given a range test, some aural tests, and one or two sight readings, and we will also ask a few questions about yourself.
