As a significant statement of our commitment to excellence in music, Durham University is delighted to announce to have joined the ‘All-Steinway’ Initiative, pledging to install further 58 Steinway pianos across each of its practice rooms, and every single one of its 17 Colleges, hence making these beautifully crafted instruments available to all our students! The work has already begun, as three brand-new crafted instruments have been added to our existing collection of six, and the rest of the pianos are set to arrive on Wednesday 27 April 2022, on what will be a momentous day for all keen musicians across the University. We hope that this significant upgrade in our current equipment will further contribute to the already unrivalled music education experience in Durham.

Steinway & Sons

Steinway & Sons is a world famed brand of excellence, and the leader in the manufacture of pianos, known not only for creating some of the finest instruments in the world, but also for their collaboration with world-renown concert halls and artists. Among their venues is the famous Steinway Hall in London, meaning the partnership will also open opportunities for students to perform there, and participate in the company’s professional masterclasses with world-leading artists both in London, and here in Durham! In addition to this, Steinway & Sons’ global performance halls include venues in New York and Hong Kong, which will also provide exceptional audition spaces for our prospective international students.

As Durham University is currently ranked first in the UK for the academic study of music (Guardian University Guide, 2021), we hope that our accreditation as an All-Steinway School will mean that we continue to attract the best and the brightest musical talent from across the world.

‘This is an exciting development, from which both the Music Department and the whole University will benefit. It acknowledges music’s central educational contribution at Durham, and the wider role it plays in the University’s vibrant student culture.’

Professor Julian Horton, Head of the Music Department
