‘Twas the end of the term, and all through Durham musicians were rehearsing for their end of term concerts…
The Music Durham societies are busy wrapping up this term of rehearsals and preparing for their Michaelmas term performances. Our winter programme is jam-packed with warming winter concerts and seasonal festivities. Christmas truly has come early, with a concert on every day in December until the end of term, with the exception of the 12th, when we all get an evening off for the annual Music Durham Winter Ball!
Kicking off the season are the Divinity Quintet, joined by the Bailey Quartet, who will perform their first concert of year, on 24th November. On 2nd December, DUOS’s Chamber orchestra offer a fairy tale evening that will transport you away from chilly Durham to lands far, far away, whilst the Symphony orchestra will tackle Shostakovich and Smetana on 25th November.
The sublime Dunelm Consort present ‘Divine Profanity’, which will explore sacred and secular vocal music of the Renaissance and celebrate the 450th birthday of Claudio Monteverdi.
On 9th December, the Classical Ensemble, in collaboration with Choral Society, will present ‘Ad Lucem’, featuring the glorious Handel’s Dixit Dominus and Bach’s Wachet Auf.
Looking for something a little more festive? Voices’ Christmas programme includes everything from Tears for Fears, to Elton John, peppered by the chart-topping Christmas classics. The Flute Choir present brand new spiced-up versions of infamous Christmas tunes, whilst raising money for the charity ‘Sense’.
On the 4th December, the Hill Orchestra will be spreading Christmas joy with their rendition of the ‘Nutcracker Suite’, followed by a cappella society the Northern Lights, who will inevitably don their Christmas jumpers for their festive concert on the 5th December.
In true Christmas spirit, some societies have joined forces for the ultimate festive musical feast. Finish your Michaelmas term on 15th December with an aca-Christmas extravaganza from Full Score and Durham Dynamics, or start counting down the days with Brass Band and Concert Band on 13th December for ‘12 Days til Christmas’!
Chamber Choir ‘Lully, Lulla’, an amalgamation of traditional Christmas favourites, old and new. They also feature in the annual Christmas concert alongside the Orchestral Society and the Northern Lights, which will be held this year in Elvet Methodist Church. Their collective programme will cover the Christmas musical gamut from soothing traditional carols to Mariah Carey. Sophie Rudge, President of Chamber Choir, commented:
“Chamber choir are busy preparing for the festive season with two concerts lined up. The first a concert of Christmas classics with a modern twist with the second a collaboration with DUOS and Northern Lights which will be a treat not to be missed!”
